Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier was a battle royale video game for mobile devices set in the universe of Final Fantasy VII. Launched on November 17, 2021, the game was developed by Ateam, Inc. in association with Square Enix. Though popular among fans of the Final Fantasy VII universe, technical troubles and a lack of player support forced developers to sunset the title on October 12, 2022 for a January 2023 closure.

Plot[edit]

The game takes place 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII in the early days of the SOLDIER program. In order to find worthy candidates, the Shinra Corporation places everyone in a virtual reality simulation of Midgar, and the winner is rewarded with a placement in the program.

Gameplay[edit]

The game is an action-shooter similar to other battle royale games like Fortnite. Up to 75 players are placed on a battlefield and must fight to be the last player standing. This can be done solo or in groups of three. As the battle progresses, the playable area will shrink, forcing players to move closer together. This game is unique in that elements of the Final Fantasy franchise are incorporated into gameplay, such as materia, summons, and well known items, along with basic firearms and melee weapons.
